Especially when the monthly bill gets bigger and bigger.<\/p><p data-start=\"397\" data-end=\"686\">One of our customers was facing precisely this threshold: out of the Azure world and into a provider-independent Kubernetes infrastructure. And with a goal that is as simple as it is challenging: in-house cluster monitoring that is powerful, automated and affordable. <\/p><p data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"836\">Sounds ambitious? It is. Monitoring and logging were implemented using the typical Azure tools such as Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and Application Insights &#8211; convenient, well integrated, but increasingly expensive. <\/p><p data-start=\"1186\" data-end=\"1524\">What initially looked like a good deal became a cost trap over time: the data volumes increased, as did the number of users &#8211; and the bills grew proportionally. At the same time, there was a desire to make the architecture more independent. Azure was convenient, but also a technological dead end in terms of flexibility.  <\/p><p data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1740\">The decision was made: out of the comfort zone and into our own infrastructure. How complex can the setup be? The options included Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, ElasticSearch, Kibana, KubeCost, Fluent Bit, Logstash and some commercial offerings. <\/p><p data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2476\">After several proof-of-concepts and a somewhat heated workshop entitled &#8220;Who actually still needs Kibana?&#8221;, the choice fell on a tried-and-tested stack:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2657\"><li data-start=\"2478\" data-end=\"2527\"><p data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2527\"><strong data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2491\">Grafana<\/strong> for dashboards and visualization<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2528\" data-end=\"2603\"><p data-start=\"2530\" data-end=\"2603\"><strong data-start=\"2530\" data-end=\"2558\">ElasticSearch + Logstash<\/strong> for centralized logging and flexible analysis<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"2604\" data-end=\"2657\"><p data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2657\"><strong data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2618\">KubeCost<\/strong> for precise cost recording in the cluster<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2659\" data-end=\"2848\">Why no Prometheus? Because the customer&#8217;s focus was not on metrics, but on logs, finances and an operational overview &#8211; and because Grafana cuts a solid figure even without Prometheus. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a8b426b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"a8b426b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f91ae7 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"8f91ae7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba17b78 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ba17b78\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b913e05 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"b913e05\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-58dd2e8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"58dd2e8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Infrastructure with Terraform<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c23c26 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1c23c26\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2884\" data-end=\"3092\">The entire infrastructure was built using <strong data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"2935\">Terraform<\/strong> and modular IaC principles. No manual clicking, no &#8220;quick test&#8221; in the web interface. Everything is reproducible, versionable and maintainable.  <\/p><p data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3216\">We created our own Terraform modules for the necessary Kubernetes resources, Helm charts and configurations &#8211; included:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3490\"><li data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3268\"><p data-start=\"3220\" data-end=\"3268\">ElasticSearch clusters with persistent storage<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3332\"><p data-start=\"3271\" data-end=\"3332\">Logstash pipelines for system and application-specific logs<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3333\" data-end=\"3405\"><p data-start=\"3335\" data-end=\"3405\">Grafana with LDAP connection and API-based dashboard provisioning<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3490\"><p data-start=\"3408\" data-end=\"3490\">KubeCost integration for precise cost breakdown per namespace, pod and label<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"3492\" data-end=\"3742\">Special attention was paid to the topic of <strong data-start=\"3535\" data-end=\"3547\">alerting<\/strong>: warnings should not just pop up, but should actually be actionable. This is why we defined our own alert rules, set up Slack and email integrations and defined escalation levels. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6dffa6e e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"6dffa6e\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f993fe e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"0f993fe\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b99762f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b99762f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc21e00 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"cc21e00\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-607af81 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"607af81\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Dashboards and alerts<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fe6d7ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fe6d7ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3777\" data-end=\"3970\">Dashboards are known to be the windows to the soul of a system. Individual panels for operations, security and finance were developed in close consultation with the customer. A few examples:  <\/p><ul data-start=\"3972\" data-end=\"4152\"><li data-start=\"3972\" data-end=\"4033\"><p data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"4033\">&#8220;Top Talkers&#8221;: Which pods generate the most traffic?<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4034\" data-end=\"4090\"><p data-start=\"4036\" data-end=\"4090\">&#8220;Cost per team&#8221;: Who burns the budget &#8211; and why?<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4091\" data-end=\"4152\"><p data-start=\"4093\" data-end=\"4152\">&#8220;Pod Flapping&#8221;: Which deployments are unstable and why?<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"4154\" data-end=\"4380\">Alarms were specifically set to threshold values where there is a real need for action &#8211; with the option to ignore them at night. The productive infrastructure was rolled out within three weeks. <\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"4963\" data-end=\"5166\"><p data-start=\"4965\" data-end=\"5166\"><strong data-start=\"4965\" data-end=\"4995\">Costs drastically reduced<\/strong>: Compared to the previous Azure setup, the monthly costs for monitoring and logging have been reduced by more than 60% &#8211; with greater transparency at the same time.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"5167\" data-end=\"5389\"><p data-start=\"5169\" data-end=\"5389\"><strong data-start=\"5169\" data-end=\"5205\">Independence restored<\/strong>: The new stack runs on its own Kubernetes environment and is portable to any other cloud or on-premise provider. This project shows that it is possible to build stable, powerful and cost-efficient solutions without the comfort zone of large cloud providers.
